One person was killed and two police officers were stabbed in the throat and neck in an attack in a French market town.

A peaceful Saturday afternoon turned into chaos after a knifeman stabbed a shopper and several police officers in the market square in Mulhouse, eastern France.

One person died after they tried to intervene, but were stabbed several times. Two police officers were seriously injured in the attack.

The man allegedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great) in Arabic just moments before the attack.

President Emmanuel Macron said there is ‘no doubt it was an Islamist terrorist attack.’

Among the injured are two municipal police officers who were stabbed in the neck and throat, according to the prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

A suspect, a 37-year-old Algerian man, is known to the police and he is registered on the terrorism and radicalisation watchlist (FSRT), Le Parisien reports.

His exact motive has not been revealed at this stage, but it is being investigated as terrorism, the city’s mayor Michele Lutz said.

He is subject to a deportation order, BBC News reports citing the prosecutor.

Three other people also suffered light injuries, according to Heitz.

Footage shows a suspect being detained by officers as he lay on the ground.

The stabbing happened at a protest in support of the Congo, where the officers were patrolling, according to the broadcaster.

President Macron said he is determined to ‘continue the work to eradicate terrorism on our soil.’

The incident unfolded in the heart of the historic city which sits near the Swiss and German border.

The terrorism and radicalisation prevention watchlist of individuals authorities are keeping an eye on was started in 2015 after the attack at the Charlie Hebdo offices and on a Jewish supermarket in France.
